Gazaleh: English language teacher, 46 years. Hazaleh is an unsecured council tenant in temporary accommodation. This means her tenancy is insecure. She was given the tenancy at a time that the London Borough of Barnet Local Authority had earmarked the West Hendon estate for regeneration, and offering unsecure tenancies removed their obligation to offer Right of Return to the estate. ‘There isn’t enough social housing so I’ve had to live in insecure accommodation for six years. The Housing and Planning Act (2016) is making it worse and all new tenancies will only be for two to five years. Living in temporary accommodation feels like another kind of being homeless. You don’t know how to plan things in your life. I’ve got two serious health issues and can’t travel so I need to look for a job close to where I live. But I have no security and will be moved on to another temporary accommodation.
