Despite the homes in East Village (the former Athletes Village) being built to the highest standard for wheelchair-accessible flats, as a fitting legacy for the 2012 Paralympic Legacy hosted in Stratford, East London, disabled residents in the social and private rented flats faced problems that the housing providers failed to rectify. These included cupboards and oven fabs that were too high to reach and no automatic door facility in the communal entrance area, which meant that the resident (above) had to wait until another resident was able to come and open it for her.
